IHM Audit and IHM Preparation

The Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) is a comprehensive document that identifies all potentially hazardous substances on board a ship. Latent hazards are identified, located and measured in accordance with IMO Decision guidelines. It replaced the Green Passport required by the Hong Kong International Convention in 2009 and has been required by the EU Ship Recycling Regulation since 2013.

IHM is an important part of ship management and should not be ignored to ensure the safety of the environment, crew and passengers on board. Regulation 5.3 of the Hong Kong Convention states that IHM “shall be maintained and updated as appropriate throughout the operational life of the ship”. Completion of an IHM is only the first step towards compliance. The ship owner is responsible for ensuring that the inventory complies with the regulations.

Manage hidden hazards on ships as a natural part of your internal processes. By integrating a Hazardous Materials Inventory (HM) system into your own structure, you ensure a smooth certification process and continuity for IHM maintenance.

There are two basic certifications required for IHM compliance. They are the International Hazardous Materials Inventory Certificate and the International Recycling Readiness Certificate.

Streamline the preparation and maintenance of IHM across your fleet with procedures we have successfully implemented at ECOMAR.

The Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009 SR/CONF/45 (HKC), which will enter into force in June 2025. And in force since 2020
EU Regulation (EU) No. 1257/2013 on Ship Recycling (EU SRR) aims to ensure that the recycling of ships does not pose unnecessary risks to human health, safety and the environment. One of the main concerns is the fact that ships may contain hazardous substances such as asbestos, ozone depleting substances, heavy metals and others, which can have negative impacts on both worker health and safety and the environment.
